Requirement:
The purpose of this course is to acquaint the students with the basic algebra and prepare for next levels of math class. The course is based on 8th-9th grade level. It is an enrichment class, which emphasizes on mathematical thinking to improve, enrich and enhance students’ ability in problem solving.
Your final grade will be based on the quiz (20%), homework (40%), and final exam (40%). I will assign homework by email after every class, and the homework is due before the Friday after the class. Please submit your homework (pdf format) to my email box.
We will have a Final exam on Dec 22, Sunday 3:15 PM – 4:20 PM (precede by a 30-min review)
Class organization:
To better understand what you have learned before, there will be a test on the first day of class. After that, in each class I will give a lecture, which is immediately followed by practices and/or activities. I may also give a quiz that is closely related to what I‘ve lectured.
The textbook used in this class is Beginning Algebra (Elayn Martin-Gay, 5th edition). You are not required to purchase this book. I will send the scanned pages with the assigned homework to you by email.
By the end of this semester, this class will cover the following contents:
1. Review of real numbers
2. Equations, inequalities, and problem solving
3. Graphing
4. Solving systems of linear equations and inequalities
5. Exponents and polynomials.
Expectation:
1. Please come to the class on time with your notebook, and pens/pencils.
2. No late homework.
3. Keep the class room clean. No food in class.
